Variety not so boffo?
The battle between old school media and new school media has been raging for some time and is nothing new. I mean look at this clip of Buzz Bissinger (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS writer) going positively ape shit over the "blogosphere." There's constant tension especially with newspapers now laying off a lot of their print staff in favor of more online content. But now we have a new issue that's bubbling to the surface. The Hollywood trades - Variety and The Hollywood Reporter - are finding themselves on the receiving end of a major gripe by a lot of movie websites who feel they aren't getting the proper credit for scoops they've broken. Heck, it happened to us just today with the Guillermo del Toro HATER scoop (reported in Variety today and first reported on JoBlo.com last year). My views on the issue are more complex as you might think and probably a little too much so to get into here. But the boys at Latino Review have put together a nice summary that will hopefully bring the issue to the forefront and help all us media people ride unicorns over rainbows while catching falling stars. Check out the article here and practice your high school forensic team skills debating the issue below.

Internet news is so...I dunno, I just know there's something about the Internet that, when dealing with hard facts, frightens me, and I don't care if it's NPR.org, that doesn't make me feel much better.
Something like JoBlo is borne of the Internet, and never had a hard copy, which I can dig, but maybe it's nostalgia I'm feeling for the printed word.
But something like Variety should probably be more Internet-based, since it's supposed to be like the final word in movie news. WHOA! That's a lot more complicated than I intended.

I do not read Variety or the Reporter. They are dated and stale. No one reads those trades unless you are in the "biz". Once they find out saving money is "hipper" "cooler" and all the kids are getting their news faster than they are paying for, things will change.
But you got to think, some people still subscribe to the daily newspaper.
You dont need to reference them if they dont reference you. Just reference your online brothers in arms.

Fuck em
They've been doing this for years, let them keep doing it. All it shows to me is how low they will go in order to get info. Latino Review's scoop shows this.
The way I also see it is you have two types of readers.

You guys are nice enough to reference them when needed but obviously they dont. So as Latino says..fuck them. Stop letting us know if variety says shit because lets face it...they dont really every say shit first. I don't think I remember a time they had some sort of scoop first. We use the internet and obv news travels faster. By the time they publish anything in their mags, the sequel is usually out.
