Watchmen's Matthew Goode, the Hobbit maybe?

It will probably be a while longer before we hear official casting for Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson's live-action adaptation(s) of Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. But we're sure whoever they select will be good. But will it be Goode?

WATCHMEN actor Matthew Goode has, at the very least, thrown his hat into the ring to play diminutive adventurer Bilbo Baggins, in his pre-Ian Holm days wandering Middle Earth.

In a Telegraph piece about Goode for his work in A SINGLE MAN, interviewer John Preston writes: "Now he’s a father, Goode doesn’t even like travelling that much. But just before we met, he’d auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s two-part film of THE HOBBIT. As he is the first to admit, he’s not an obvious choice – ‘Look at the size of me for Christ’s sake!’ If he got the part, he would, he says, find it almost impossible to refuse – despite the fact that it would involve him spending several months in New Zealand."

Unless the recent speculation to the contrary proves true, the first of the HOBBIT movies is due in theaters December 2011. Goode (also excellent in the underappreciated crime movie THE LOOKOUT) will next appear in Ricky Gervais' CEMETERY JUNCTION.

Extra Tidbit: Despite the obvious shrinkage required, how well do you think Goode fits the fuzzy feet?

I think if they do the miniaturization thing on him he would be a pretty good Bilbo. Still prefer Martin Freeman, but this guy's just slid into 2nd place for me.

Well, now that you mention it, sounds like a fine idea! Would've never thought of him.

He's probably a better fit for one of Middle-earth's gay elves rather than a hobbit.

I've only seen him in "Watchmen", so although judging him only from that I would say he's a bad choice, I do acknowledge I've yet to see him in more other stuff in order to form a relevant opinion. As of now, I stand neutral on this choice.

Just seen him in Watchmen but I thought he was great in it so make it happen :)

Going to see A Single Man the first chance I get, so soon I've seen him in two films at least.

Hmmm
I actually caught him in LEAP YEAR, thinking it was going to be terrible and he was rather funny it in. Combine that with his range from Ozzy in WATCHMEN to the phenomenal bad guy in THE LOOKOUT and you have a man who has mad range. I'm looking forward to seeing more and more of him.

I like this idea, he's an outside choice but that's something I hoped would happen. The shrinking wouldn't be a problem, look at John Rhys Davies as Gimli as he was over 6 feet himself. It seems Matthew Goode is set to become a hot ticket, I like the guy so if this happens I'll be content with it.

Please Let This happen!!!
I am a big fan of Matthew Goode and has been excellent in everything I have seen him in. I think he would make a very good Bilbo Baggins and I think he would give real character to Bilbo. I really hope he gets it
