WB goes all Blu-ray
In a move that could put the final nail in the HD-DVD coffin, Warner Bros. has opted to go exclusive with Blu-ray for their high definition DVD releases. Warners was the last major studio who was releasing in both formats. WB explains the decision was made "in response to consumer demand" and that "
"consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray" - translated, that means their Blu-ray discs are selling better than their HD-DVD discs. They will continue to release discs in both formats until May 31st, after which they will move to Blu-ray (standard format DVDs will obviously continue to be released). In addition, New Line, the sister studio of Warners, will follow the Blu-ray suit (LOTR fans, get ready to plunk down some serious cash for a Blu-ray box set). So the big question is what does this mean for HD-DVD. Well with only Paramount and Universal as exclusives, it's not good news. Blu-ray now has Disney, Fox, Sony and WB/New Line. Paramount's exclusive deal runs through 2008, after which Toshiba may throw in the towel on HD-DVD. Thoughts? Feeling burned with your HD-DVD player? Thrilled your PS3 isn't stuck with a losing format? Strike back below...

i learned my lesson when it came to vhs vs beta. getting me to rebuy all my stuff on dvd from videotapes worked. will i rebuy it all on hd or blu-ray now? NO.
funny thing is, after not buying any discs lately, save for the 5 set of bladerunner, my fave film, ive realized maybe its not worth buying ANY dvd's now, especially higher priced new technology ones. lets face it, at $30 a pop, plus tax, you could rent it 5 times from the store. that means any movie you buy, should be worth watching 5 times at least, to justify the cost. hollywood just doesnt make that many films worth owning.
im holding back, period, from ALL dvd's for a bit.

%$#@ HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It's way too gorramn soon for another format. Hell, many of my favourite movies and shows haven't even been released on DVD yet...and now I'm supposed to start all over? AGAIN?!?
The upgrade from VHS to DVD was substantial, so I was cool with that.

But the upgrades from DVD are, at best, modest (and the days of discs, in general, seem to be numbered anyway; do many people still buy CDs, for example?)...and for that I'm supposed to re-buy all these bloody movies again?
%$#@, the suits really do see us all as Kevin Bacon in Animal House ("Thank you, Sir! May I have another?").
I wonder how many people, like me, have curtailed their DVD purchases 'cause the format may soon be obsolete...but are also, again like me, avoiding HD-DVD and Blu-Ray 'cause they're tired of getting %$#@ed by the suits?

We've been telling you all for two years now, here at The Digital Bits, that the smart thing to do as consumers was to sit this format war out. But we've also been saying - much to the irritation of some online - that our many years of experience in this industry suggested to us that, if you WERE going to take a risk on high-def discs, Blu-ray Disc was the better bet. It was, and it is.
The bottom line has finally become obvious to all: Blu-ray Disc is now the clear choice for mainstream consumers.

Not Blu-Ray? Of course the figures will say more blu ray are selling if there are more mainstream titles out there, however, tell the layman you have a blu-ray and be met with, huh?? Or say High Definition DVD and i bet they know what you mean. The war is far from over. The hddvd will win in the end.

Besides that, I don't care a lot. I know a lot of people like Blu-ray because the name is flashier; but that's one of the reasons I prefer the HD-DVD's. To me, HD-DVD sounds a bit more serious about quality, while Blu-ray just sounds like they are relying somewhat on flash to sell their product. They don't have to be as high quality, they will get that all-important young people market, by showing them a flashy name.
Plus, I'm just biased against Sony because they ruined Christmas for me 9 years ago. I hold grudges. ha!
And hey, Mr. Ravenwood, I'm in complete agreement with you regarding downloads. I prefer having a disc, too. I wouldn't want to store my collection on a hard-drive unless they could guarantee that if something happened and the drive got wiped out, that they would replace the movies. I mean, sure a fire could wipe out your collection of DVDs, and no, I wouldn't expect them to replace my downloads if destroyed by something like a fire. But if some system error killed my collection, I wouldn't be at all happy to have to buy them again. It may not be, but storing all your eggs in one basket like that just sorta feels dangerous.

Blu-Ray has better menu options. No matter which wins, I just want there to be a unified format and soon so I can move on. I already own 4 HD-DVDs and 0 Blu-Rays, but I just want the war over in either direction.

All the signs pointed to Blu-Ray winning the format war and we finally have a sign that the war is over. That gives Blu-Ray exclusive rights to 70% of titles. This is great news for all movie fans.
