Peter Weir We've all heard the rumor that New Line is supposedly attempting to seduce Sam Raimi into directing an adaptation of THE HOBBIT now that Peter Jackson is public enemy number 1 (through 20) around the New Line offices. AICN recently dropped another name into the directorial mix, however - MASTER AND COMMANDER director Peter Weir. If it's true, it certainly isn't a bad choice. Weir is familiar with big budget actioners with a surprising amount of heart so if he is to take over for Jackson, he's certainly capable of doing as good a job. Of course, this is all just rumor until officially confirmed or denied but, either way, what do you guys think about it? Good choice? Bad choice? Too Australian-y choice? Strike back a little sumtin', sumtin', will ya?

Source: AICN

Extra Tidbit: Weir has directed 5 different actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Linda Hunt, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams, Rosie Perez and Ed Harris.

Weir is a great director, but I don't think the Hobbit should be made without Jackson. Too bad the whole problem with New Line is getting in the way of PJ coming back and finishing what he started.
By the way Stock... I could be wrong but I think Tom Bombadil was in Fellowship of the Ring (his story line was left out), not The Hobbit.

Sure he'd do a good job, but that story would be difficult. It kind of jumps from child-like wonder to gruesome battle, plus it has characters like Tom Bombadil, who haven't ever been captured on screen. It would take someone with great vision as a director. Weir's not a bad choice.

I was dissapointed with Raimi's directing Spider-Man 3. He did a poor job of balancing the action, drama and comedy of the film. The best scene of the movie (Bruce Campell's waiter scene) was very [link] as was all the scenes of Spidey in the black suit and with the Bugle editor. Peter Weir....FUCK YEAH! He rules at action and drama. I've seen Master and Commander and the Truman Show...I'm convinced.

It's piss to say that anybody but PJ could do this movie, but if he didn't I think that PW (just doesn't have the same ring) is a pretty damn competent choice, I feel like it might be a bit more stark, but that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing...

I don't like the idea of Weir doing this. I mean, he can do the drama parts good, but the action parts? fuck no.

YAY!!!!!!
Thank baby Jesus! Keep Raimi away from this, he needs some time-out! I reckon the choice could have been more Australian-y. We should get Mel Gibson (I know, he's pretty much American, but damn it we educated him!) and lets have the Hobbits speaking their native Hobbitan while being absolutely massacred all over the shire!

Uhhhh....good choice as far as credentials, but I'd take him for Hobbit only if he had done family-action films. Not a bad nomination, though. We'll see. Although in all honesty, I gotta agree with powerbomb and say Raimi could do it better. The way he's directed the spidey-films pretty much fits the styled needed for Hobbit, and after SM3, I want him off of those anyway.

good.

The last thing I need on my DVD shelf is another 8-hour Peter Jackson epic. I'm all for giving a director complete control, but shit...hire an editor if the director can't discipline himself.

Peter Weir is on of the greatest filmmakers of our time. He is a much much greater choice than Sam Rami.

This guy obviously knows what he's doing , but New Line still doesn't get it , it's not just about skill and talent with regards to the Hobbit , or the Lotr trilogy for that matter , it's about something intangible that i can't really explain , that translates to the screen because of the spirit behind it . Pj captured that spirit and created a world not too many could have imagined could have been realized cinematically . Everything was aligned when those films were created , it was something akin to fate , and Pj saved a studio that was in need of something big .

This is how they thank him for his efforts , these guys were prob wel off before the trilogy , but now , mainly because of Jackson , they are jillionaires , living the high life , he covered alot of their mistakes in the past , made them go away with these three films , and it wasn't because he was trying to be a directorial hero , it's because he was grateful for the chance to share his talents , his passion , his skill , his genuine affection for the world of middle earth , the money came second .

I think Pj changed the face of epics with these efforts , he deserves to expand on , and finish off what he started , he is the only man or woman that should go anywhere near these films . This is his baby , if he doesn't do it , nobody else should , New Line has to stop being cheap ass ( if they are holding back on money owed , it's more than cheap , it's criminal at this point ) pinheads and open their books , if they are holding back on money owed to Jackson , consider me a person that will never , ever buy , watch , or pay for another one of their films . I'm not even buying any future Lotr trilogy offerings until they come to their senses . Hell , how can i know the money will go to who it's supposed to at this point , these guys are toxic in my book .

No Raimi , he's just a he made money with Sm current golden boy pick , although i'm not saying he couldn't do it , no Pan's Toro , no Commander Weir , wake the fekk up already New Line , and conduct yourselves like gentlemen .

Swallow your pride , show Pj the books , and kiss and make up , or just bite your tongue , if you are even capable of such .If not , as far as i am concerned , the Lotr trilogy directed by Pj ( but unfortunately produced by NL ) will be the only official , most effective , genuine cinematic creation of Middle Earth . Go and choose someone else to do the Hobbit , have your fun and rip someone else off , i'm even surprised someone else will even trust you lot after this debacle .

This whole affair leaves such a bad taste in my mouth , it really is tainting what Jackson and crew have done , it's destroying what these films mean to me , it's anathema to what these films were about .

"Too australian-y"? Isn't Peter Jackson from New Zealand? Either way, Weir would actually be a pretty good choice, I think. He's great at these character-driven atmospheric films.

Peter Jackson should be the only person to direct this movie. I don't know what the hell New Line is thinking. Hopefully they will waste so much time trying to replace Jackson that the license will slip back to the studio that had it. I think I heard somewhere that they will hire Jackson to direct if they get the license back.

God no. Please let Raimi do it. I want to see a Spider-man movie that doesn't suck.
