Werner Herzog is crazy Jun. 6, 2008

Werner Herzog is a pimp. And not in the way that my father was a pimp, but in the way Ernest Hemingway was a pimp. Here’s a guy who has the audacity to remake a cult classic and claim to have never seen a movie by the director who made it. He actually claims to not know who the director is. When it was announced that Herzog would be remaking the Harvey Keitel crime drama Bad Lieutenant with Nicholas Cage in the lead, people didn’t believe it. Well, it’s going down, and Abel Ferrara, the original film’s director, is peeved. Last month at Cannes, he vented on the issue, saying, “I wish these people die in Hell. I hope they’re all in the same streetcar, and it blows up.” What about everyone is else on that streetcar? Is Abel Ferrara summoning the death of innocents, just so his movie won’t get remade? Grim.

Anyhow, when pressed about Ferrara’s comments by Defamer, Herzog lobbed the perfect comeback—ignorance. “I have no idea who Abel Ferrara is. But let him fight the windmills, like Don Quixote.I don’t feel like doing an homage to Abel Ferrara because I don’t know what he did—I’ve never seen a film by him. I have no idea who he is. Is he Italian? Is he French? Who is he?” Ah Werner, we love you.

Extra Tidbit: Herzog's latest, ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, is dedicated to Roget Ebert.

According to Herzog himself it is NOT a remake of Ferrara's film. And he's very much aware of who ferrara is:

I guess we'll have to see it for ourselves to confirm if this is not just damage control.

I like Werner Herzog and he has more talent in his pinky than Ferrara has in his whole body! I do think remaking Bad Lieutenant is a big waste of time and money. Keitel gave a great performance in a bad movie, and since Nic Cage gave up acting about 15 years ago he will give a bad performance in a bad movie.

Y'know, I liked "Bad Lieutenant" in that love/hate way. But if Ferrara and Herzog were to go head to head, I'd put money on the German, if only for his many dealings with Klaus Kinski. Ferrara's kind of fucked up anyway, but I do like "King of New York." This whole remake thing is the most surreal thing I can remember happening in the movie biz in a long time. I'm not surprised somehow Ferrara would wish death upon whoever wants to remake this movie, partly because who'd WANT to remake his movie?! But Herzog, who threatened to shoot uber-premadonna Klaus Kinski if he abandoned the set of "Aguirre, the Wrath of God," is pretty nutty, too, so in a way he's perfect for this movie.

...in a way...

I dont see why this movie would need a remake. Its perfect the way it is! But on the other hand Herzog is a genius so his version could turn out to be a masterpiece.

But with Nicholas Cage? Why Cage?

I dont know...Im on the fence about this one.

That could be a bad move, depending on whether the film is similar or not.
