Wow. Where to begin with this one...

When our very own, Chris Bumbray reviewed CATFISH (odd title) after he saw it during Sundance, he couldn't provide much.

After you watch the trailer, you'll realize why.

Bumbray advised me that the story is true. The guys who made the film actually had a production company and they shared an office with Nev, the director Ariel Schulman's Brother. In order to test out some cameras they filmed Nev's everyday life, and it takes a turn when Nev received an amazing painting from a little girl. I'll give you the synopsis now and let you judge it for yourself. Check out Chris's quote in the trailer as well.

Official synopsis:

Nev, a 24-year-old New York–based photographer, has no idea what he’s in for when Abby, an eight-year-old girl from rural Michigan, contacts him on MySpace, seeking permission to paint one of his photographs. When he receives her remarkable painting, Nev begins a friendship and correspondence with Abby’s family. But things really get interesting when he develops a cyber-romance with Abby’s attractive older sister, Megan, a musician and model. Prompted by some startling revelations about Megan, Nev and his buddies embark on a road trip in search of the truth.

Very intriguing, unsettling trailer. Being curious, I searched for and found the video of Abby painting: [link] Unfortunately it appears that this YouTube account is a massive spoiler gateway into the real life subject of the doc. Considering the web based premise of the movie, I'm a bit shocked that no one considered how easy it would be to look up. They could have simply...

Considering the web based premise of the movie, I'm a bit shocked that no one considered how easy it would be to look up. They could have simply cropped the shot to not include the video title as a safeguard.

I've been reading up on this for a while and it is fake.. a Blair Witch type of fake where it seemed real for 20% of it but at the same time you get that odd feeling about the documentary.

I heard it's fake
Apparently all the online profiles were created at the same time as the "documentary" went into production, the film-makers have been really evasive when confronted with this information [link]

Wow they sound like pricks going off like that over a legit claim.

The movie definitely caught my attention but the more I read about it the less appealing it becomes.

Maybe more so than the movie, I think the advertising for it is pretty incredible. It's nice in this day and age of spoilers and 2.5 min. trailers to actually watch a feature for a movie and still have very little, if not any, idea what the movie is really about. Good on them.

Intrigued as hell
I watched the trailer before reading the synopsis, so in the beginning I just thought that it was a silly romantic comedy filmed in a documentary style. Obviously, my opinion changed drastically by the end. Man, I need to see this flick.
