Whitaker defends Things Mar. 27, 2008
Source: MTV by: James Thoo

You know the story, right? WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is in serious trouble, or at least the vision director Spike Jonze had is, anyway. Well, today Forest Whitaker is speaking out about the film's quality. Whitaker, of course, plays the head creature in the film, Ira, who "puts the holes in trees", and today he says he took his kids to see a screening of the film that has been deemed too dark and scary for children. There's no word yet, as to whether he burns their feet with Bunsen flames just to make sure that noise about extreme heat and pain isn't bullshit either, but reports are pending.

Whitaker talks a lot of sense and says a lot of good things, such as the following: "I'm going to call Spike and find out what's going on," he promised. "The thing is, it's one thing to read [scary stuff] in a book, but when you see an itty-bitty kid running alongside a 10-foot-giant on the side of a cliff, it gets intense. But that's the point, because we're representing the things inside of the kid. They represent his struggles, either him being too angry or being confused, or not feeling like he belongs. They're a gargantuan extension of the way he's feeling inside."

It's certainly noble, Whitaker standing up for the film, and totally refreshing to see an actor recognize the need to do that. My fear though, is that even though the guy is kind of a big deal, and has a gold statue to back that up, battling a studio may still be a bridge too far. Make sure you read the rest of the interview HERE, he says some good shit.

Extra Tidbit: As much as I desperately want to see Jonze's cut, I guess it has to be understood that when a studio sinks a ton of a movie into a film, it might be worried it isn't gonna get that money back. Hell, when I bet fifty bucks on a football game I spend the next couple of hours petrified I just threw away my money. And that's fifty bucks. Fifty.

Hey, remember when kids' movies used to be "too scary" for kids? Or when the kids swore and talked like real kids do? Remember "The Witches", "The Monster Squad", "The Goonies"? Remember in the original "Chocolate Factory" when it's not even certain any of the kids besides Charlie SURVIVED? When did we start mistaking protecting children from adult content with treating children like idiots? They grow up more well-adjusted and intelligent when they're not talked down to.

"Rudy, what are you doing?!"
[loading arrow into bow]
"I'm in the god damn club, aren't I?"

I rest my case.

JOHNNY KNOXVILLE COMMENTS ON WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
Over at Jackassworld.com, Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera were having a live chat and I asked about this movie and what they thought of the current slump this movie seems to be in. Knoxville didn't exactly comment on the slump but he said he saw an advanced screening of it and loved every bit of it. He said it reminded him of classic kids movies he grew up with.

I really hope they decide not to tamper with the original cut.

Johnhawks is so right it makes you wonder why the studio could be so wrong.

The darker this movie is the better it will do.

FREE WILD THINGS!!!
Spike Jonze works magic. Kudos to Whitaker for backing up the original vision of this film. As proffesionals, Warners had to realize what they were getting themselves into by letting Spike take the reins on this project. I say they drop their campaign for Justice League Fucking Mortal and focus on the proper marketing for WILD THINGS. Let's see this bad boy hit theatres!!

MERCHANDISING
The studio has no idea how important this movie could be. They don't NEED to sell this movie to kids. If they want to make money on merchandise, all they have to do is market to the Hot Topic crowd. Sell the merchandise to late teens and twenty-somethings who grew up with the book and would LOVE a dark, mature version of it. Look at Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Labyrinth, and The Dark Crystal. All of that was really dark and scary, but guess who much money their STILL making off merchandise at Hot Topic and the like!

It's completely unnecessary to market this film to children, because there are like three generations of now teens and adults who are dying to see this film by a director they can respect.

I'm tellin' you. WTWTA has no business in the kids isle of Wal-Mart and Target. But they'll make a killing at Hot Topic and Spencer's with McFarlane toys, black t-shirts, messenger bags, etc. Damn studios are fucking retarded.

"DARK"? "SCARY"?

Y'know, IMHO, many of the best, classic "kids" movies WERE dark and scary. I'm thinking "Time Bandits." And "The Neverending Story."

Hell, even the original "Doctor Who" series' Golden Era was during its darkest, scariest and, yes, most popular years. So, of course, the suits back then fired that particular show runner and lightened up the show...which then died a long, slow and frequently embarrassing death (as its ratings slid further and further down).

it's ridiculous what studios deem scary and indeed parents. I mean i'm not sayig graphic violence should be displayed in pg movies but seriously it's where the wild things are. you gave it to a director with vision so don't be surprised if he decided to make something new of it. family entertainment certianly needs an injection as well. it's getting stale generic and repetive and i only hope that spike jonze is able to get this out and enliven it even the tiniest bit.

Good man Forrest! Let's hpe other actors follw his example lest we have a hollywood dominated by unimaginative misers...wait a minute...

Yeah, but they hired SPIKE JONZE and DAVE EGGERS. They said, "Here's a lot of our money that we're giving to you, Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers. Go make a movie." If they're scared of the movie being too offbeat and scary and weird, they should've thought of that before they hired these guys.
