Zemeckis talks Roger Nov. 4, 2009

Don't worry, there's still no motion capture for Roger or Jessica.

Robert Zemeckis sat down with MTV who squeezed a few details out about his latest project, the ROGER RABBIT sequel.

On Halloween, Mr. Davis brought the great news that the original screenwriters, Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman would be returning to pen the sequel.

We thought everything was safe, and to a certain extent it is, but Zemeckis will be using the motion capture technology on other characters in the toon universe. I know that some people aren't really a fan of the mo-cap technology but at least they aren't using it on the rabbit and his sexy redheaded wife. Zemeckis knows that there would be a mutiny if he messed with the original 2D duo.

Can you deal with the other toons being done in motion capture? It might seem like an odd blend but we'll just have to wait to find out.

Extra Tidbit: Question: Will Kathleen Turner voice Jessica again? Anytime I think of Turner, I go back to the days when she played Chandler's Dad on FRIENDS.

PLEASE get Bob Hoskins back on board. One of the most classic/anti aging films of our time, don't fuck up the sequel.

Zemeckis fell off. Way off. "Cast Away" was one of his best and most emotional films - then he gets fixated on this shitty CGI stuff. I'm not necessarily opposed to motion-capture, but there's a difference between utilizing it and basically just forcing it. A Christmas Carol doesn't benefit from it; Beowulf didn't benefit from it. It was interesting as a curiosity on Polar Express, but there's a reason both of his previous mo-cap films underperformed (or downright flopped) at the B.O. -- and Carol probably would, too, if it weren't for the familiarity of the story and the cast.

I'm not against using modern technology to render Golden Age characters. I am against doing anything that would make this movie any more surreal than live people interacting with cartoon characters. Meaning, no CGI explosions, or rendering live people in mo-cap.

While I'll happily claim "Roger Rabbit" to be the best mesh of live-action and animation (any kind) ever, I am of the mind that until I see some real footage, or at least hear what the script is about, that this is one of those woulda-shoulda-coulda ideas that expired years ago.

Mainly because it means the movie will have to be set in present-ish day. One of my favorite parts about the original is that it was set in the 20s or 30s or whatever (God, I'm a horrible Roger Rabbit fan). The whole revised history aspect involving Toon Town and the highway system was fantastic. If they wanted to update it, age the characters a few years like Jones or whatever, the 50s would be cool, but present day is much less interesting to me. I do love the original, and hold out hope that this movie is good, though.

I am not a fan of MoCap in the least, though, especically after seeing the trailer for Christmas Carol. Looks so much worse than Pixar which is not Mo-Caped.

But now any time I think of Kathleen Turner I just think of how goddamn dirty she is on Californication. Jesus Christ that woman almost makes me blush.

If they motion capture the live-action actors, then this will be dumb as hell. It's actually pretty sad, because Zemeckis was one of the most creative directors in Hollywood for awhile, and he did some of the most memorable films of the 80s, and since then he's just been stuck on this motion capture thing. Instead of trying out new ideas, or difference concepts, it's just motion capture madness over and over.

This sounds good so far. I'm glad their not messing with the way Roger looks. I REALLY hope they get the original people to voice Jessica and Roger and that Bob Hoskins is in it again!
