HEREDITARY writer/director Ari Aster's second feature is being released by A24 later this year, and a couple days ago the distributor shared a promo image that simply said "Sommar", making me think that was the new title of the project, which had been going by the working title MIDSOMMER. That is not the case, the film still has "Mid" in its title; the only thing that was changed is one letter. The title is now MIDSOMMAR.
The MIDSOMMAR title is confirmed by another promotional image A24 has shared, along with the newly released poster, which can be seen below.
Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe, MIDSOMMAR has been called an "apocalyptic breakup" movie and described as "Scandinavian folk horror".
The story centers on
a young woman, already dealing with the death of her parents, who joins her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to Sweden, specifically to a remote town with unique midsummer traditions. Things go south from there.
This really seems to be something along the lines of THE WICKER MAN, hopefully leaning more toward the 1973 version than the 2006 remake.
We'll see when MIDSOMMAR is released on August 9th.
