Cast This: Captain Nemo

In this edition of Cast This we will be looking at casting one of the most famous literary characters of all time, Captain Nemo. The fictional character, created by the French science fiction author Jules Verne, has been in print as well as stage and screen. He’s know the world over as one of the best known antiheroes in fiction; he’s a mysterious figure who has been portrayed by a number of different actors and will once again hit the big screen in an upcoming adaptation of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA from Bryan Singer.

Nemo has been characterized as stern, but mostly guilt-ridden over any loss of life, even when it comes to his enemies. He’s sometimes seen as the moral compass of the team while claiming to have no interest in the affairs of the world above. He occasionally intervenes to aid the oppressed or by saving the castaways from drowning.

Casting will be crucial, as the shoes to fill once belonged to legends like Kirk Douglas and James Mason. So let’s get to work with my first pick, David Tennant. Most people probably recognize him as The Doctor from Doctor Who, but I’ve listed him here more so for his dramatic work on Broadchurch playing crusty detective Alec Hardy. He’s versatile and the role of Captain Nemo would be perfect for the Scottish actor. The theme of actors from the UK continues with my next choice, Clive Owen. The actor has shown time and time again just how talented he is and with an epic like 20,000 Leagues I’m sure he can command the screen as well as the legendary character. Check out Owen in CHILDREN OF MEN for confirmation on my suggestion.

Perhaps a little too obvious for a role as Captain Nemo, my last choice would be the always great Hugh Jackman. What else can be said about the multitalented actor? He’s been in every type of role and sadly the closest he’s got to a role of Captain was playing Blackbeard in PAN. He would be great to watch on screen as Nemo and everyone would love to see an X-MEN reunion between Singer and Jackman.

Who would you say could bring the role to life? I’ve heard Russell Crowe’s name being thrown in from time to time. His resume includes Master and Commander so I imagine that can’t hurt. What if we went older with Bill Nighy? The thespian thrills me anytime he’s on screen with either his scowling dramatic turns or his dry humor. There is also the idea of Anil Kapoor, the Indian actor has a huge following and would make sense considering Nemo’s background (depending on who you talk to).

So let’s hear your suggestions! Tell us who should play Captain Nemo!
