Cast This: Spider-Man!

Hold up, Marvel and Sony struck a deal to get Spider-Man to kick butt alongside the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? You don’t say! Hell has frozen over, and that’s why we are here.

My Spidey sense tells me that you guys have been turning those gears trying to come up with a new actor to play the role of Peter Parker. With Sony stating that they aim to go back to the days of a younger Peter while not rehashing an origin story, one has to wonder who you can drop in that will have instant appeal and a persona that just says, “That guy is a great Spider-Man.” If Andrew Garfield is too old at 31 years of age, then how far do we need to take this thing? Early twenties? If we want to get technical, Peter was fifteen when he was bit by that wandering radioactive spider. Do they want someone that young? If they plan to bring Spidey into CIVIL WAR, he’s already married to Mary Jane so he’s well past being a youngster (if they follow the story directly).

According to the rumor of the day, the studio is looking to both Logan Lerman (FURY, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) and Dylan O’Brien (THE MAZE RUNNER, TEEN WOLF) to play the web head. Both actors are 23 years old which puts us at an early twenties Spidey, if the scoop is true. Does this mean we have to give up hope that Donald Glover will get the opportunity to slip the costume on? While I was doing some research, I noticed that quite a few people are still lobbying for Garfield to come back. I don’t know if you’d believe me, but I even saw some people wishing for the return of Tobey Maguire.

Since most of us are more than familiar with the character of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, I thought I’d take the conversation to the virtual streets to get some opinions from the movie fans on who they were looking to cast:

”I think Ben Barnes would work. He’s age appropriate and in pretty good shape. Also, Kodi Smit-McPhee could be good also.” –Eric W.

I vote for Logan Lerman. He’s the right age for a “young” Spider-Man. I originally wasn’t sold on this kid as an actor, but his performance in FURY won me over. He’s got the looks and the talent. I totally can see him in the role. He’ll need to buff up, but that won’t be a problem.” – Michael G.

Dylan O’Brien is my pick. He’s got the charm, humor and the look of what I think Spidey would be nowadays.” – Nino C.

”I think they should skip Parker and go straight to Miles Morales. Is Donald Glover too old now to play Spider-Man?” –Elford A.

If we go the Morales route, what about two great up and comers like Shameik Moore (DOPE) or RJ Cycler (ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL)? They both fit the age criteria and definitely have the talent. No matter what, I look forward to the upcoming developments. It's just exciting overall that Spidey is back where he belongs.

Let's hear it! Who do you want to play the next SPIDER-MAN??

RESULTS FROM PREVIOUS 'CAST THIS': The Vampire Lestat:

1. Tom Cruise 2. Tom Hiddleston 3. Cillian Murphy

So we stick with Tom then, aye? I for one would be all for him reprising the role. I alsoam super into your second pick with Tom Hiddleston. That makes me feel all sorts of feels. Cillian was a choice I didn't really think of, but I like the idea of him taking that on. The strong silent type turned into a quick witted brat prince- works for me!
