Chinese Blood Simple

Considering all the times Hollywood has plundered movie material from Asia, turnabout is fair play.

So a Hong Kong remake of the Coen Brothers’ noir classic BLOOD SIMPLE is in the works, from no less than acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS).

The Coen’s 1985 black comedy revolves around an adulterous affair between a bartender and Abby, his boss’ wife. When her husband Marty learns of th situation, he hires a lowlife detective to have them killed. Double-crosses and mixed messages lead to a series of murderous mishaps.

Yimou’s version “San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi” (roughtly translated as “THE STUNNING CASE OF THE THREE GUN SHOTS”) stars Chinese actor Sun Honglei, comedian Xiao Shenyang and actress Yan Ni, and marks the director’s first work since he designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics.
