BIOSHOCK remains one of the game titles most want to see become a feature film. Alongside HALO, BIOSHOCK is one of those movies that seems to have a life before sliding back into development hell. Most recently, Sony appeared to have plans for a potential film adaptation but we haven’t heard much since then.
The closest to a BIOSHOCK movie we ever got was back in 2008. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN director Gore Verbinski was deep in development for the film at Universal with a screenplay by SKYFALL’s John Logan. Verbinski planned to make an R-rated, $200 million film. Universal slashed the budget to $80 million and Verbinski walked. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was then brought on, but in 2010, BIOSHOCK creator Ken Levine shut it down.
Now, we have a look at what could have been thanks to concept art by Kasra Farahani. Farahani has worked on art for SPIDER-MAN 3 and THOR amongst other projects and this art clearly shows that the movie would have looked a lot like the BIOSHOCK game. Big Daddy and Little Sister are central, as they should be. beyond nice atmospherics, it is hard to tell if Verbinski’s vision warranted $200 million, but I am still intrigued to see this as a film.
