It's official, Warner Bros. WONDER WOMAN has officially been banned in Lebanon mere days before the film was scheduled to debut in the country's theaters.
The ban come about when the Lebanese group Campaign to Boycott Supporters of Israel-Lebanon declared that the film's lead actress, Gal Gadot, is an Israeli and former soldier in that country's army. Lebanon exhibitor Grand Cinemas announced that the ban was official on its Twitter page earlier Wednesday morning.
Due to the cancellation of WONDER WOMAN screenings, the film will no longer be shown at the 15 locations in which it was set to screen. That might sound like much, but it's important to note that it's a small territory. In the past, Lebanon has screened Gal Gadot's film projects such as FURIOUS 7, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, FAST AND FURIOUS 6, and FAST 5. The ban was decided by Lebanon’s Ministry of Economy.
Right now, Lebanon is officially at war with Israel and has a law set in place that boycotts Israeli products and bars Lebanese citizens from traveling and/or having contact with Israelis. The decision was finalized upon learning that Gadot is a supporter of Israel's military policies against the Palestinian region of the Gaza Strip.
WONDER WOMAN directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, and David Thewlis will arrive in theaters outside of Lebanon on June 2, 2017.
