Death Wish, The Sentinel director Michael Winner dead at 77

It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news that legendary director Michael Winner passed away earlier today at the age of 77 due to heart and liver problems.

Winner’s career behind the camera spanned more than 40 years and included more than 30 feature films, including the first three Charles Bronson-starring DEATH WISH films as well as action-faves THE MECHANIC and THE STONE KILLER,  the Burt Lancaster-starring spy film SCORPIO and the classic chiller THE SENTINEL.

The flamboyant British director, who directed films on both sides of the Atlantic, had been in ill health for a number of years and almost died after contracting a bacterial infection while holidaying on Barbados in January 2007. Last year it was reported that liver specialists has told Winner that he had between 18 months and two years to live.

In a statement released to the media, his wife Geraldine Lynton-Edwards said “A light has gone out in my life.” With his passing, the film world is also a little darker today.
