Dreamworks is remaking Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca for some reason

The article’s title says it all, really. Dreamworks and Working Title Films have hired EASTERN PROMISES scribe Steven Knight to draft a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s immortal mystery REBECCA. The word is that this version will go back to the original story by Daphne du Maurier, but there will be no avoiding the fact that it’s following in the footsteps of “The Master of Suspense.” And that’s never an enviable task…

In the original REBECCA,
a young woman believes her every dream has come true when her whirlwind romance with the dashing Maxim de Winter culminates in marriage. But she soon realizes that Rebecca, the dead first Mrs. De Winter, haunts both the temperamental, brooding Maxim and their mansion, Manderley. In order for Maxim and the new Mrs. De Winter to have a future, Rebecca’s spell must be broken and the mystery of her violent death unraveled.

Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing; the two have a very respectable filmography, including FARGO, FROST/NIXON and TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY. They must know what they’re doing…(?)

No director has been hired yet, but the lucky recipient of that honor has their work cut out for them.
