Dual: Karen Gillan prepares to battle her clone in first look image

Nearly two years have gone by since we heard that Karen Gillan would be starring in writer/director Riley Stearns’ sci-fi thriller Dual, and now a first look image has finally arrived online. This image shows a blade-wielding Gillan, whose character is preparing to battle her own clone, having a chat with co-star Aaron Paul, and you can check it out below.

Gillan is best known for playing the roles of Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers films, Amy Pond in the Doctor Who TV series, and gaming avatar Ruby Roundhouse in the recent Jumanji films. In Dual, she takes on the role of

a woman who, after receiving a terminal diagnosis, opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family. When she makes a miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death.

In addition to Gillan and Paul, the cast also includes Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-O) and Martha Kelly (Baskets), with Stearns’ The Art of Self Defense star Jesse Eisenberg making a special appearance.

Stearns produced Dual with XYZ Films. Filming took place in Tampere, Finland, and some of the financing was provided by the Finnish venture capital company IPR.VC. The production ended up in Finland because they were looking for somewhere to film in the midst of the pandemic, and the country turned out to be such a good host that XYZ plans to make more movies there.

I was sold on Dual as soon as I heard that Gillan would be fighting a clone of herself in a movie, so I’m glad to see that it’s starting to make its way out into the world. A release date has not yet been announced, but we’ll let you know when it is.

Does Dual sound like a movie you’d like to watch? Let us know your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
