Ethan Hawke: Moon Knight villain based on David Koresh

When it was announced that Ethan Hawke would be joining the MCU as the villain in the upcoming Disney + series, Moon Knight, we all figured he’d bring a little something extra to his role. Widely considered one of the finest actors of his generation, Hawke doesn’t always dip his toe into the mainstream, but when he does, he always does something interesting with his parts. While no one knows yet what villain he’s going to play, fans will no doubt be coming to their conclusions following an appearance last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers

As reported by THR, Meyers told Hawke, who was sporting long hair and glasses, that he looked like notorious Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh. Pleased by the comment, Hawke noted that he was basing his Moon Knight villain on Koresh, telling Meyers, “I guess it’s working. You’re good, Seth. Or maybe I’m not out of character yet.”

Koresh, of course, is notorious for his role in the Waco Siege, which was memorably dramatized in a terrific limited series called Waco, which you can catch on Paramount Plus in the U.S (Netflix internationally) if you haven’t already. Taylor Kitsch gave the performance of his life in that mini, which co-starred Michael Shannon.

Getting back to Ethan Hawke’s Moon Knight villain, he mentioned to Meyers that his casting in on the series had a lot to do with Oscar Isaac, who plays the titular hero, a.k.a Marc Spector. “I was at a coffee shop and he came up to me and was like, ‘I really liked The Good Lord Bird. Want to be in the Moon Knight with me?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah.’ So it happened the right way.”

The six-episode Moon Knight series debuts on Disney + sometime in 2022.
