Felicity Jones would love to reprise her Spider-Man role as Black Cat

When Sony’s plans for a shared universe of movies crumbled after the disappointing reception to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 some terrific prospects went with it. One of them was that of now Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones as Felicia Hardy a.k.a Black Cat, who only got a few scenes in ASM2 without ever getting into some serious sleuthing in future movies. But with a major career under her belt it seems even more logical to bring her back for another shot, and after all these years Jones says she’s game to get back into the Marvel business.

Jones has been out on the road overseas promoting the new movie ON THE BASIS OF SEX (in which she plays Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) and in talking to Yahoo Movies UK she was asked about a possible return to the Spider-verse, should the offer be extended.

“I’d love to keep exploring her,” Jones said. “She’s a great character.”

At the time before the release of ASM2 starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, there were plans for a massive shared universe of Spider-Man movies in the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the on the docket were two more Spider-Man movies, as well as a Sinister Six movie from Drew Goddard. However, despite that big web of movies, Jones said that when she was brought on there was no guarantee she would be back for more.

“There was never anything written down that that would definitely happen. It was more just…I like playing characters where there is a little bit extra to play with and it was just fun to play someone who has this other identity.

Within less than a year of ASM2’s failure, Sony partnered with Marvel Studios to bring the web-slinger into the MCU, starting with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and leading to his own movie. Tom Holland was cast in the role, and has since appeared in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and this summer’s SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME.

As for Sony’s side universe of movies, they had a hugely successful go with VENOM starring Tom Hardy, which made over $800 million around the world (despite a critical tongue lashing). Still, they're having trouble getting other projects going, with the proposed Silver Sable/Black Cat movie still not getting started. Gina Prince-Bythewood was set to direct, but it seems she is only on as a producer at this point.

Black Cat could be incorporated in another way, as her character has a relationship with Morbius, the Living Vampire, whom Sony is developing a movie around now with Jared Leto set to star.

What we’re getting at here is that Sony clearly has plans for Black Cat in some form or another, and with no one cast yet there could be room for Jones to get back in the game. In the time since her brief appearance, she’s become an A-list star, snagging an Oscar nomination for THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING and leading a billion-dollar movie in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY. She would be a great fit for the character and would give her a chance to leave her mark on another franchise.

The newest Spider-Man movie, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME, hits theaters July 5.
