FX not moving forward with Deadpool animated series from Donald Glover

The 2016 megahit DEADPOOL brought the Merc with a Mouth into the mainstream in ways no one imagined, and in the process opened an entire playground just waiting to be explored. One way Fox was going to capitalize on the Deadpool brand was with an adult-centric cartoon with rapper/actor/comedian/director/unstoppable force Donald Glover and his brother Stephen writing and executive producing. But now the deal has gone the other way and FX has pulled the plug on the whole show.

The show was going to be made as a production by Marvel TV with a partnership with FX Productions and ABC Signature Studios,  which is the same situation set up for another FX-Marvel show – LEGION. The show was given a 10-episode order back in May, but FX has now bowed out of the DEADPOOL show citing the go-to answer for all changes in Hollywood – “creative differences.” Here is the network’s statement.

Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series. FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.

As of now, Fox still has the rights to Deadpool, but due to the recent acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney, the rights could shift to the House of Mouse should the deal be finalized. But should that deal not go through, Marvel and ABC would have to use a Fox-based TV studio (like 20th Century Fox TV) to make a Deadpool show happen. The report (via Deadline) states that this show was meant to be part of an overall deal the Glovers have with FX Productions, and given how they bowed out, chances are the duo would not be involved with another iteration of the show.

Well, this is all just one big shame. A Deadpool animated show could've been great, and possibly even more like the comics than the movie is. Plus with the Glovers behind the wheel, it could've been something really special. I guess we can stick this one up on the great pinwheel of "projects that could've been."

You can catch DEADPOOL 2 in theaters May 18.
