Godzilla vs. Kong: Warners to fork over $250 million to stream on HBO Max

Yesterday, we reported on Warner Bros.'s troubles with Legendary and the issue of releasing Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong on HBO Max simultaneously with theaters – both big, blockbuster films that Legendary had financed up to as much as 75% of their respective budgets. While it seemed that there seemed to be a plan to release Dune solely in theaters to preserve its franchise potential (especially since the first film only covers one-half of the original novel), they seem to have come to a different solution for Godzilla vs. Kong. Per Deadline:

Godzilla Vs Kong might stay an HBO Max hybrid in its May 21 slot, but only if Warner Bros makes a deal with Legendary that uses as a base the $250 million value established when the film was shopped earlier to Netflix.

So, no confirmation on if Warner Bros. has – or will – pay Legendary $250 million dollars, but it seems likely unless they want to push it back further, or face potential legal issues. Either way, we'll keep you updated!

Meanwhile, Godzilla vs. Kong – directed by Adam Wingard (You're Next) – is currently still set to premiere in theaters and HBO Max May 21, 2021.

Humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course. And the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain. They unearth clues to the Titans’ origins. A human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures from the face of the earth forever.

So what do you guys think? Still looking forward to the big fight? If so, who do you think will win? Either way, sound off below!
