Charlize Theron not signed up for Mad Max: The Wasteland?

Last Updated on July 22, 2021

This might have been an odd thing to see pre-MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, but not anymore: It’s hard to imagine another MAD MAX movie without Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. The tough-as-nails character stole the show in George Miller’s instant-classic this past May, and while some expressed regret that her screentime came somewhat at the expense of Tom Hardy’s Max, you cannot deny Furiosa/Theron owned every single scene she was in.

So that’s why it’s somewhat surprising to learn she may not figure into the franchise’s future plans. We know Miller and company are already planning MAD MAX: THE WASTELAND (though it hasn’t been officially greenlit yet), and one would think Furiosa would figure into the tale somehow, but to hear Theron tell it, it’s not a sure thing.

In an interview with USA Today, Theron seemed surprised to learn about the existence of THE WASTELAND:

What’s Wasteland? This is all news to me. I have not heard anything like that.”

This will continue to play out in the coming months as Warner Bros. decides whether or not it will actually move forward with another MAX. The film is closing in on $370 million worldwide, which is respectable but not stunning when you consider it cost at least $150 million. As well liked as the film is, a sequel would still be a pricey gamble. Once that decision is made, it will be time to move on to Theron’s involvement.

Now’s a good time to remind you MAD MAX: FURY ROAD will hit Blu-ray and DVD on September 1st. Maybe the home video numbers will truly spell out MAX’s fate. Pre-order right HERE.
