Cool Horror Videos: Check out early make-up designs for Ridley Scott’s I Am Legend

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Years before Francis Lawrence and Will Smith brought it to the big screen, the film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I AM LEGEND passed through several hands, including Ridley Scott’s. Scott was in line to direct the film, while Arnold Schwarzenegger was going to play the last man on Earth, Robert Neville. Obviously, Scott vision never made it past the conceptual stage, but we can still take a peek behind the curtain to see what might have been.

Below you’ll find a brief clip featuring make-up tests performed for the aborted film by Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis. Lots of very cool and creepy designs here, all of which are thoroughly more interesting than the dreadful CG creatures we got in Lawrence’s version.

Also, if you want to look at what make-up genius Steve Johnson did for Lawrence’s film that didn’t make it into the final cut (yes, it’s also much better), check out this article we wrote up a few years back.
