Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot gets release date

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have settled on a release date for their reboot of Toho’s iconic GODZILLA franchise. May 16, 2014 will see the King of the Monsters return to nationwide North American theaters for the first time since GODZILLA 2000. The big “G” is being re-imagined by MONSTERS director Gareth Edwards, who seems like the perfect man for the job.

The studios have confirmed the reboot’s direction “will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner.” The film arrives to theaters “presented in 3D” though whether or not it will be shot in the format or converted later is currently unconfirmed.

A number of screenwriters have drafted the project so far, including David Callaham, Max Borenstein and David S. Goyer, but specific details on the film’s plotline remain tightly under wraps. Being a GODZILLA flick, you can be sure the story will probably involve Godzilla rising from the sea and Japanese tearing sh*t up. While we count down to the release date (which is a long, long way off), let’s all enjoy a sexy bootleg screencap of the trailer presented at July's Comic Con. Go-go Godzilla!

Extra Tidbit: My Dad took me to see GODZILLA 2000 in theaters. It was a wonderfully nerdy father-son bonding experience.
