GK Films & Tobey Maguire’s Material Pictures setup alien invasion flick 5th Wave

Last Updated on July 23, 2021

Between the occasional film role, collecting a SPIDER-MAN residual and folding pocket Jacks at the card table, it seems Tobey Maguire does a little producing from time to time…

In conjunction with Sony and GK Films, Maguire’s production company Material Pictures has scooped rights to THE 5TH WAVE, Rick Yancey’s trilogy of young adult novels. Although it’s skewing younger, it does feature alien invasion and abduction, so you know we’ll be keeping you in the loop every step of the way.

First things first, the gist:

THE 5TH WAVE follows a teenage girl who survives an alien invasion only to then search for her brother, who may or may not have been abducted by human-looking extra-terrestrials. There’s also a romantic angle, as the heroine is helped by a boy who might also be an alien in disguise.

Yup…color me cynical, but when I hear “young adult novel” and “romantic angle” I’m instantly hit with blinding TWILIGHT. If 5TH WAVE is a just a weak imitator trying to capitalize on the success of Twi-hards…I want no part of it.

Do you?
