Harold Zwart's The Mortal Instruments gets a summer 2013 release date

Sony/Screen Gems has set an AUGUST 23, 2013 release date for the first film in the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS trilogy. Directed by Harold Zwart, the film will be based on Cassandra Clare's novel, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES. It stars Lily Collins (MIRROR, MIRROR) as Clary Fray.

It's an interesting choice; usually late August is the home of late summer horror/action flicks. As Sony is surely hoping MORTAL INSTRUMENTS will be the next TWILIGHT/HUNGER GAMES, I'm somewhat surprised they've given it such an indistinct date. (However, at the moment it has no competition in that slot; ROBOCOP opens two weeks earlier.)

In the series’ first book “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”, set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Principal photography is expected to begin August 15 in Toronto.
