Work may be completed on the GODZILLA sequel GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, but the work has only just begun on the GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND crossover GODZILLA VS. KONG, which began filming a week ago.

Directed by Adam Wingard (YOU'RE NEXT, THE GUEST) from a screenplay by Terry Rossio, the monster smash-up has the following synopsis:

In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.

The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Demian Bichir, Lance Reddick, and Shun Oguri, with Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler also showing up to reprise their roles from GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS.

Skarsgard and Gonzalez are featured in the first pictures to leak from the set, pictures in which they're both wearing jumpsuits and are apparently on some kind of official mission. Maybe they're Monarch agents on the "perilous mission" mentioned in the synopsis. Skarsgard was seen filming an intense moment in which he knocks around a poor sap (also in a jumpsuit) beside the wreckage of a crashed helicopter.

Various pictures of Skarsgard and Gonzalez working and chilling on set can be seen in the tweets embedded below.

GODZILLA VS. KONG is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with Kenji Okuhira, Yoshimitsu Banno, Jon Jashni, and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers and Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, and Tamara Kent co-producing.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS arrives in theatres on May 31, 2019 and GODZILLA VS. KONG will follow with a 3D, 2D, and IMAX release on May 22, 2020.

Godzilla and Kong previously fought each other in the 1962 film KING KONG VS. GODZILLA, pictured above.
