Insidious: Chapter 4 lands director, will haunt theaters October 2017

Insidious Chapter 4 Adam Robitel Leigh Whannell Blumhouse

The INSIDIOUS franchise is one of the premiere horror series in cinemas right now. Led by James Wan's taut original that squeezed every last drop out of a PG-13 rating and followed by a much weaker Part 2, then course corrected by a surprisingly decent prequel, the INSIDIOUS movies have been all over the map. However, they're never anyting less than intriguing entries in the incrasingly waterlogged genre of paranormal flicks.

So, in my eyes at least, it's pretty unequivocally good news that INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4 is officially a go, with director Adam Robitel (THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN) signed on to helm the project. The film will hit theaters on October 20, 2017. Robitel will be taking over for Leigh Whannell, who directed the third entry and penned all three. Whannell will also handle screenwriting duties on this sequel, keeping the tone of the franchise intact.

The INSIDIOUS movies have been kind of chameleon-like (the first took after POLTERGEIST, the second was a SUSPIRIA-tinged explosion of color and surrealism, and the third was more of a medical exorcism horror), and I can't wait to see how the promising Robitel can follow his chilling debut feature.

It is currently unknown whether or not the flick will pick up from PART 2's timeline or continue on from the prequel's ending. But it is known that Lin Shaye will be returning for a fourth turn as the medium Elise Rainier. Shaye has become the de facto protagonist of the series now that it has moved away from Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne's Lambert family, and her gung-ho performance is certainly worth checking out the new film sight unseen.
