UPDATED! Jena Malone reportedly lands coveted Catching Fire role

UPDATE: Today, Lionsgate finally confirmed that Malone has been cast as Johanna Mason in CATCHING FIRE.

As of last week, it appeared as though three lovely ladies were in the mix for the coveted, highly-visible role of "Johanna Mason," a key supporting character in the sequel to THE HUNGER GAMES, CATCHING FIRE. Jena Malone, Mia Wasikowska and Zoe Aggeliki were the names popping up from various sites, but now this particular game seems to have wrapped up...

The Hollywood Reporter has it that Ms. Malone (SUCKER PUNCH, THE RUINS) is the lucky gal set to slip into Johanna's shoes. According to THR, Malone "has the offer and is in early negotiations for the part," which essentially seals the deal. (That said, let's not rule out the possibility of her not getting the part until it's 100% confirmed.)

In CATCHING FIRE, which is set to begin production in September under the direction of Francis Lawrence, Johanna becomes a strong ally with Katniss and Peeta during the 75th Hunger Games, but has a testy relationship with Katniss who likens her to an older sister who hates you. She's a fierce competitor who has no family and friends left in District 7 where she hails, with her weapon of choice being an axe.

Also starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland, CATCHING FIRE has a NOVEMBER 22, 2013 release planned.
