John Carpenter: Michael & Laurie sibling twist was a terrible, stupid idea

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Wow, today is just John Carpenter Day here at AITH, huh? Not that I'm complaining!

I guess just to be fair to the one dude out there that doesn't already know, let me just say that there's a big SPOILER here for Blumhouse's upcoming direct sequel to John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN. As we (probably) all know by this point in time, Blumhouse's HALLOWEEN sequel has jettisoned HALLOWEEN 2's long-standing idea that Laurie Strode is Michael’s sister and made Michael and Laurie, as they say, perfect strangers.

Almost everyone I know is on board with the new film's director and co-writers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride erasing the sibling plot point. But just what does John Carpenter (who wrote HALLOWEEN 2) think of not only the twist itself but new HALLOWEEN's choice to ditch it.

Well, it turns out the master of horror was drunk when he came up with it anyhow. Carpenter told Daily Beast:

Well, okay. Here's how it was. I made Halloween, and then Halloween was sold to NBC to show it. But it was too short—they needed it to be a certain length. So I had to go back and shoot some more footage to make it longer. And I was absolutely stuck. I didn't know what to do. I mean, the movie is the movie—I don't want to touch it. But everybody will be happy with me, and they'll make money, and that's great. So I had to come up with something. I think it was, perhaps, a late night fueled by alcoholic beverages was that idea. A terrible, stupid idea! But that's what we did.

Drunk or not, I don't think the idea of making Laurie Strode the secret sister of Michael Myers was a bad idea. It sure as hell gave us enough story to get through quite a few sequels, so I think, ultimately, it was a smart move on Carpenter's part. What do you think of Carpenter's idea to make Laurie and Michael Myers brother and sister? Are you glad that Green kicked this aspect to the curb for Blumhouse's HALLOWEEN? Let us know below!
