Joseph Kosinski makes his decision on who will compose Oblivion: M83

One thing that has a huge affect on a film that a lot of people don’t think twice about is the score. A score to a flick can pretty much make or break it. Director Joseph Kosinski knows this. That’s why he took his time in choosing a composer for his next film: OBLIVION.

According to the guys over at IndieWire Kosinski has made his choice in the form of M83. M83 is a French electronic act fronted by Anthony Gonzalez. They have built a steady fanbase and critical acclaim with their unique and powerful larger-than-life compositions that swell both the heart and ears all at once. So it looks like Kosinski isn’t straying far from his TRON: LEGACY/Daft Punk pairing. I like it! Check out what Kosinski had to say:

“I was listening to his music back in 2005 when I first wrote this story, so he was part of this from the very beginning in my mind, kind of creatively. And about two years ago, when I started putting together a shortlist of people I’d love to talk to for this project, I sat down with him and we talked about it. And it was very clear he had a passion for film and I knew just from his electronic music that he had the potential to create something epic.”

“The story has a small cast of characters, it was designed as kind of a character-driven story, but at the same time it takes place in a vast world. So I need a score that is both emotional, but at the same time can feel big and have a lot of space in it. And his music has that. It’s emotional, it’s triumphant, it just has a spirit and a life to it. It can feel very intimate but it also can feel just huge when it has to. His music is able to capture all those different feelings and qualities simultaneously.”

Sounds good to me!

The film centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. He’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.

OBLIVION, which stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo, is finally set to hit theaters everywhere on April 26, 2013.
