A couple years ago, we heard that Warner Bros. was interested in making a new film in the THE MATRIX franchise, which is news that I don't think anybody found shocking. Franchise creators Lana and Lily Wachowski may have wrapped up their story as a trilogy, but there was no way Warner Bros. was just going to sit on a property as popular as THE MATRIX forever. At that time, screenwriter Zak Penn was working on expanding the universe of the franchise with a story that wouldn't be a remake or reboot, but would take place within the world and mythology the Wachowskis had created.

Somewhere along the line, the Penn project fell apart and was replaced by one that really is shocking: Lana Wachowski is set to direct THE MATRIX 4, with trilogy stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss signed on to return.

We don't know the plot, but we do know that Lana Wachowski wrote the script with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell… and now we know that Reeves has read the script.

Entertainment Tonight caught up with Reeves at a special screening of the film SEMPER FI, which was produced by his sister Karina Miller, and while he was understandably tight-lipped about THE MATRIX 4 he did confirm that he has read the script. When asked if he's happy where Neo is in the story, he replied,

Absolutely. It's very ambitious, as it should be."

And that's all he could say about it.

Wachowski has said,

Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."

Lilly Wachowski does not seem to be involved with THE MATRIX 4. Lana Wachowski is producing the film with Grant Hill.

THE MATRIX 4 is expected to start filming in early 2020.
