We're just three weeks away from the release of director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' KONG: SKULL ISLAND, the film that will introduce one of cinema's greatest monsters, (King) Kong, into the MonsterVerse being built by Legendary Entertainment. Although set a few decades earlier than the events of Legendary's 2014 GODZILLA movie, SKULL ISLAND will be connected to GODZILLA in some way, and a new clip has revealed the connection.

In a tense conversation between characters played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman, Goodman informs Jackson that he works for Monarch, the scientific organization featured in GODZILLA, and specializes in the hunt for Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms. The creatures Godzilla fought in the 2014 film were referred to as Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms, MUTOs for short.

Of course, mentioning Monarch and Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms isn't going to rock the worlds of any viewers who don't remember those words from GODZILLA, but those who know… we know. It's all connected, and it's building up to GODZILLA VS. KONG, which is currently scheduled for a May 29, 2020 release.

Goodman's dialogue might not be the only GODZILLA nod in KONG: SKULL ISLAND. Word has come out that viewers should stay in their seats during SKULL ISLAND's end credits, as there's something extra to see in there. It sounds like Legendary might be following the lead of the superhero cinematic universes and using an end credits scene to further set up the connections between films.

Jackson and Goodman's KONG: SKULL ISLAND co-stars include Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero.

Written by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, the film has the following synopsis:

The year is 1973. Somewhere in our world, it is said that there exists a wondrous island unspoiled by man – a land shrouded in mystery, where myth runs wild. Uncharted and undiscovered.

When the secretive organization known as Monarch identify this destination as the origin point for mysterious new superspecies, they mount an expedition to discover its secrets.

What they find on Skull Island is an adventure beyond any human experience. An exotic paradise of wonders and terrors, where flora and fauna have fused together into an Eden of otherworldly jungle creatures.

As one group fights to escape and the other declares war on Kong, we discover that the mighty primate is at the center of a battle for dominion over the island, locked into a ‘survival of the fittest’ face-off with the terrifying apex predators responsible for wiping out his kin.

Driven by vengeance, Kong will become nature’s fury, and fight to take his rightful place upon the throne of most powerful beast on the island, revealing the story of how Kong became King.

KONG: SKULL ISLAND will be reaching theatres on March 10th. The next entry in the MonsterVerse, GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, will follow two years later, on March 22, 2019.
