Release news: Spike Lee’s Oldboy gets 2013 release, Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium pushed back 4 months

That time again folks, another round of release date musical chairs…

Spike Lee’s OLDBOY, in the news recently for adding actor James Ransone, has been set for an October 11, 2013 release. Again, I hate the idea of this movie being remade, but what better time of year to see such a jaw-dropper in theaters? Seems a perfect October fit!

Starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley:

OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen, below) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

From one Sharlton Copley flick to another. Copley, who you may recall got his big break in Neill Blomkamp’s DISTRICT 9. Well, Blomkamp’s sci-fi follow-up, ELYSIUM, is the other flick getting a new release date. Originally, it was to come out March 1, 2013, but now ELYSIUM will bow in theaters August 9, 2013. Could be a dead of summer hit!

With Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura and Alice Braga (below) leading a splendid cast:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

So get the old datebook out. OLDBOY drops October 11, 2013. ELYSIUM hits August 9, 2013.
