Robert Rodriguez mounting Machete sequel: Machete Kills!

They f*cked with the wrong Mexican… again!

That’s right, Robert Rodriguez is currently in pre-production on a sequel to 2010’s MACHETE, tentatively titled MACHETE KILLS! (This is a sequel title that Rodriguez floated out there while promoting the first flick.)

MACHETE KILLS will be funded by Russian producer Alexander Rodnyansky, who is just getting into the production game here in the U.S. The Rodriguez flick will be a presence at the Berlin Film Festival.

“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said to Deadline. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”

It’s looking like production will commence in April. Obviously, Trejo will most likely reprise his titular role (the guy is in just about every other junky movie out there, no reason he should turn this down), while the rest of the first film’s cast may return – those who survived, that is. Kyle Ward (KANE & LYNCH) wrote the screenplay, based on an idea by Robert and Marcel Rodriguez.

The plot, as Deadline has it: The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.
