Ryan Gosling calls Only God Forgives a nightmare

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

As we eagerly await the release of Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE follow-up, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, all we can do is sit and imagine the possibilities. The tale of gangsters and revenge in Thailand, the film reunites Refn with Ryan Gosling, and all signs point to it being an even more thrilling and visceral experience than DRIVE. (Hard to imagine, I know.)

The Playlist recently snagged a couple of choice quotes from Gosling about the film, which give the impression that we’re in for a very dark ride indeed.

It’s very extreme… It’s part of the same dream as ‘Drive,’ but it’s more of a nightmare than a dream but it’s more extreme.”

We know that Refn can do “nightmare” pretty well; if you’ve seen his VALHALLA RISING, you know it’s like sitting through a surreal, grim dream you can’t escape from.

Gosling continued, noting the fact that he and Refn were far off in Thailand meant no studio interference.

We shot it in Thailand and no one was watching… So that’s what happens when you let Nicolas loose in Thailand. There’s no one around to put the reins on and he’s completely unleashed.”

If you weren’t chomping at the bit to see ONLY GOD FORGIVES already, you should be now. It hits theaters in the fall.
