"Spartacus" star Peter Mensah joins 5th season of HBO hit "True Blood"

With the rigors and expediency of television, one is usually afforded the luxury of casting right up until production begins. And with a few months until "True Blood" returns to HBO, the hit vampire skein has added some new, ahem, blood...

Word from Deadline is "Spartacus" star Peter Mensah (above) has been added to the 5th season of "True Blood." Mensah will play Kibwe, a ruling member of the Vampire Authority.

Again, I don't watch "True Blood," but if I did, I'd be pretty pumped about this addition. Mensah, who's also appeared in 300, AVATAR, JASON X etc., has one of those recognizable faces of dignity and gravitas. Seems like he'd make a nice counterbalance to the young, dumb cast members he'll work opposite of.

Speaking of - Mensah joins additional newcomers Christopher Heyerdahl, Scott Foley, Lucy Griffiths, Dale Dickey, Louis Herthum, Valentina Cervi (below) and Kelly Overton.

The season 5 setup: Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders and government officials around the world have chosen their sides, but in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.

Extra Tidbit: How much longer do you think "True Blood" will run?
