Trailer: Art haunts Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler director’s Velvet Buzzsaw

Dan Gilroy and Jake Gyllenhaal previously worked together on Gilroy's great 2014 directorial debut NIGHTCRAWLER, and now the paired have teamed up again for a project titled VELVET BUZZSAW, which is set to reach the Netflix streaming service (and select theatres) on February 1st.

The film also stars Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Zawe Ashton, Tom Sturridge, Natalia Dyer, Daveed Diggs, Billy Magnussen, and John Malkovich.

There seems to be some resistance to calling VELVET BUZZSAW a horror film, as press materials refer to it as a thriller and the trailer starts off looking like a quirky comedy… but once supernatural entities start bursting out of artwork to turn people into a dead, bloody mess, it seems safe to call this horror.

One official synopsis only tells us that the story is set 

in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.

Another digs a little deeper: 

After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

Before its February 1st Netflix debut, VELVET BUZZSAW will be screening at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27th.
