For me, any movie about a person dealing with a homicidal maniac while on a road trip will always be compared to the 1986 classic THE HITCHER, which starred Rutger Hauer as a murderous hitch-hiker… see, the title was fitting. So when I see that Rumer Willis stars in an upcoming film about a woman turning out to be a maniac during a road trip, I immediately start thinking of this project as "Rumer goes Rutger".

The Rumer Willis film is called WHAT LIES AHEAD, and Vision Films is going to be releasing it into select theatres on March 1st. A VOD and DVD release will follow on March 5th.

Directed by Rob Gardner from a screenplay by William J. Viglione, the film also stars Emma Dumont, Kelly Blatz, and Katie Keene.

The synopsis:

When two young women are thrown together on an unexpected road trip in "What Lies Ahead", a peril emerges between them that grows stronger with each passing mile.

Jessica (Dumont) is head over heels in love with her new boyfriend Kyle.  But when he is unexpectedly called to ER duty, he asks Jessica to fly to his home town in Georgia and accompany his sister Raven (Willis) as she drives up to New York to move closer to him following the recent death of their mother.  Jessica reluctantly complies. As the two women get to know one another on this three-day journey – encountering assorted locals and misadventures along the way – it soon becomes clear with each passing mile, that something just isn’t right. What began as an awkward yet innocent road trip ends up in a terrifying and brutal fight for survival that will change both women’s lives forever.

WHAT LIES AHEAD looks like some B-movie thriller fun to me, so I'll definitely be checking it out sometime next month. Give the trailer a look below and see what you think.
