Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning poster pushes limits of badass

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

This year, filmmakers seem to be pushing the boundaries of how much testosterone can be on display in one movie. THE EXPENDABLES 2 pushed it to the limit, but kept many of its stars appearances in small enough doses to remain healthy. No, I’m more worried about UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING, a film practically choking itself to death with its own slam-bang masculinity. Based on the new poster, below, this could lead to dangerous amounts of badassitude.

We’ve got Van Damme and Lundgren front and center, the Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin of action films. I don’t know what it is, but when they get together magic happens. The kind of magic that explodes in your face and kills everything in sight. That was proven with the previous UNIVERSAL SOLDIER films, but RECKONING strikes me as more interesting as they seem to both be the antagonists. That’s a great twist, as it also hands off the keys to the UNIVERSAL SOLDIER kingdom to Scott Adkins, the heir apparent to the sort of action stardom that was prevalent in the 1980s.

Now do you see what I’m talking about? This film is going to make mince meat of us all. With John Hyams back behind the camera and a script that’s riffing on Joseph Conrad’s HEART OF DARKNESS, this film has no other choice than to be amazing. Check out the poster and synopsis (below) and get ready to bust some heads, UniSol style.

The film follows surviving Unisols Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren) who must battle anarchy and build a new order ruled by Unisols without government oversight. They are weeding out the weak and constantly testing their strongest warriors in brutal, life-and-death combat. Luc has emerged operating the Unisol Church of Eventualism, a self-help organization that takes in wayward Unisols whom the government has been secretly operating as remote-controlled sleeper agents. His mission is to liberate these Unisols from the implanted memories and the lies the government has inserted in them.
