Interview: Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw talk The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson’s latest feature is one of the best films of the year. The Black Phone is haunting, and unsettling, with an exceptional script by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill – based on a short by Joe Hill. And it features a stunning lead performance from Ethan Hawke. Yet the heart of the film lies in the beautiful performances of Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. The two young actors carry this film and help elevate an already fantastic feature, by giving two of the boldest performances I’ve seen in quite awhile. The two are so good that it brings a light and energy to the dark and frightening tale told here.

We recentely sat down with both Mason Thames an Madeleine McGraw. The two actors discussed the very dark subject matter, and how they approached the material. For Mason, he opened up about playing off of an especially wicked turn from Ethan Hawke. I honestly can’t say enough about both Mason and Madeleine here. Derrickson smartly uses these two talented young actors, and it truly adds to an already great film. I highly recommend The Black Phone for not only horror lovers, but for anybody who appreciates great cinema. Yes, The Black Phone is that good and it’s opening today! Answer the call.
