It producer assures R-rating; says second half of the book will be a sequel

A lot of you guys are excited for, or at least curious about, the IT remake—which is totally cool. The book was huge, the television movie with Tim Curry has its followers, and given stories in the news clearly more people have fantasies about acting like killer clowns in the woods than I thought. But overall you guys want it to be a faithful adaptation, and in that respect the producer of the movie assures you they have your back.

Dan Lin spoke with Collider recently during press for LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, and he talked about how a killer clown chasing around a bunch of school children should, and must, get a particular rating from a certain ratings board that rates movies:

It is a rated-R movie. If you’re going to make a ‘Rated-R movie’, you have to fully embrace what it is, and you have to embrace the source material. It is a scary clown that’s trying to kill kids. So of course that’s going to be a rated-R movie.

Fans can sleep easier now (or worse, depending on how you feel about R-rated killer clowns) knowing the movie won’t succumb to the depths of the PG-13 teen slasher fare that infants could handle, and that it will embrace the spirit of the book fully. That being said even though we will get the full story of the kids being chased by the clown, this doesn’t mean we will get the full story. Twist!

Lin went on to confirm that the second half of the book, which follows the kids into adulthood, will act as a sequel to the movie if this one does well. This seems like a logical move given the size of the book (and the split-it-up nature of Hollywood movies now), but it could dampen the spirits of anyone hoping the movie would be the complete story.

I can’t say this shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to people. The movie comes out in September and filming has already wrapped, and we haven’t heard any casting news around the adult versions of the kids. From the looks of it they want to see how this movie does, and if it does well they will tell the other side of the tale. My only hope is this movie works without having to end on a cliffhanger, just in case it ends up being the only movie we get. But that’s another issue for another day. For now let’s hooray over the R-rating business! It can’t be a killer clown without some proper gore. Without it he’s just a seriously-injuring clown.

IT arrives out of the plumbing September 8 starring Bill Skarsgard and directed by Andres Muchietti.
