John Williams will score the new Star Wars…right?

To say John William’s film scores are iconic is still an understatement. I mean, take a look. Obviously he’s received a lot of rightfully earned credit for his work throughout the years but when they’re all lined up next to each other it just seems even more impressive.

One of John William’s most recognized and beloved works is of course STAR WARS. While most of the news has been about what stories may be told and what actors/characters may re-appear in the new films, little has been said about his involvement. Coming Soon has a report from someone that was in the audience of a concert last week by the Young Musicians Debut Orchestra, which was being conducted by John Williams. Before launching into the epic theme song for the film, he reminisced a little on STAR WARS and his hopes of returning for the future films:

“We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”

I think most of us may have assumed that John Williams would return but Coming Soon also notes that J.J. Abrams almost always works with composer Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK, SUPER 8, 50/50), so it’s not like John Williams is a lock at this point. If Giacchino does end up working on the new STAR WARS instead of John Williams, those are some mammoth shoes he’s going to have to fill. How up in arms are you going to be if Williams doesn’t compose the score? Could we be getting a new theme song?
