Joss Whedon is working on a World War II horror film

Nerd icon Joss Whedon began his career in the trenches of horror, writing scripts for troubled flicks like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and ALIEN: RESURRECTION before successfully subverting the genre in the Buffy TV series, but he's been so busy with Disney/Marvel projects that he hasn't had time to return to horror since his work on 2012's THE CABIN IN THE WOODS.

However, that's about to change. In an interview with Complex, Whedon spoke about the current project he's working on:

I’m in the middle of a screenplay that I am extremely passionate about…it’s definitely a departure from the things that I’m known for. It’s as dark as anything I’ve ever written. I just said, ‘OK, id, your turn.’ I would write scenes and be like, ‘Oh this is great! I shouldn’t be allowed near people.’ It’s a historical fiction/horror movie about a time when the world was going insane, World War II. I got to tell you, I was in Germany and Poland doing research for this movie and I was seeing so many parallels [to the U.S.]. And I know it’s a shopworn thing to compare the orange guy to the little guy with the mustache, but you see things, indelible things in terms of propaganda, the state of the country, and the parallels are eerie as f*ck.

A script that freaks out its own creator? That's something I want to see put onscreen. That's all the information we have so far, since the project is obviously in an extremely early stage. But I hope we hear developments on this sooner rather than later!
