Manuel Facal is preparing to pop The Zit

From Uruguay-based writer/director Manuel Facal comes one of the most interesting high concept ideas I've heard in a while: EL GRANO, a.k.a. THE ZIT.

Facal took inspiration from the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino film FROM DUSK TILL DAWN for the structure of THE ZIT, in that it will start off in one genre and shift into another. THE ZIT begins as a romantic comedy before transitioning into a psychological horror film in the vein of Frank Henenlotter's cult classic BASKET CASE (pictured below).

The story centers on

René, a young woman who falls in love with René, a young man. But a zit begins to grow on her face, and starts looking like her dead ex-boyfriend, feeding on her guilt and then fear, developing human features and becoming more and more dangerous for her new boyfriend, René.

A human zit growing on a young woman's face? This is something I have to see, especially since the plan is for the zit to be realized entirely through practical effects.

THE ZIT will be a co-production of Mother Superior and Aeroplano Films. Filming is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2016, although it hasn't been determined if the film will be shot in English or Spanish, or in Montevideo, Uruguay or Los Angeles. Regardless of which path they decide to take, I will be watching THE ZIT as soon as possible.
