Miramax and Martin Scorsese are trying to bring Gangs of New York to the small screen

One movie my Dad could watch over and over was Martin Scorsese’s GANGS OF NEW YORK. I was sort of hard on it at first because of Cameron Diaz. Then finally one day I broke down and watched it– I loved it. So Diaz isn’t the best part of the movie, but the dynamic between Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis coupled with the beautiful scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Can you believe that this movie was released ten years ago? It feels like just yesterday my Dad was telling me how awesome it was, and that he wanted me to see it posthaste. I wonder what he would think now that Miramax and Martin Scorsese are trying to bring the flick to the small screen as a series.

The series will follow, “the story of the movie and draw on events surrounding organized gangs at the turn of the 20th century and shortly thereafter, not only in New York but in such cities as Chicago.

Scorsese said this on expanding the world within GANGS OF NEW YORK, “This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour fillm. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”

If they could find the same spark that makes BOARDWALK EMPIRE so great, and combine it by bringing GANGS OF NEW YORK back to life, I definitely see it being something worth watching. Would you bring it to HBO to compete with BOARDWALK, or do they maybe see it as new life after that series?

Can’t wait to hear upcoming news as the series develops.
