Production on a sequel to The Last Exorcism begins next month

So I guess THE LAST EXORCISM wasn't the last? Maybe they should retroactively change the title to THE PENULTIMATE EXORCISM. Reminds me of a Monty Python bit where Leonardo da Vinci paints The Penultimate Supper with kangaroos and 20+ disciples, and the Pope is really not happy. To be fair, I bet the Pope isn't too happy with THE LAST EXORCISM /an untitled sequel either. Interesting connection there.

Ed Gass-Donnely (SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS) has been chosen to direct.  The movie is due out by the end of the year, is planned to take place three or or so months after the events of the first movie, and will carry a brand new R rating.  Here's Eli Roth, producer on the first film as well as the sequel, sounding off on his thoughts about the movies and the rating change (the first one was PG-13): "[I'm] very, very excited to continue to this story. Obviously with the title of the first one we had not planned on a sequel, but we love the story and subject matter and had what we feel is an inspired idea to continue it. As you can see from other recent films, fans around the world are fascinated by this subject matter, and we want to go deeper and darker this time. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers. The biggest creative challenge will be coming up with the right title!”

Ashley Bell is once more set to star as Nell Sweetzer, while the script has been written by relative newcomer Damien Chazelle.  The first flick was made for a mere $1.5 million but managed to gross over $70 million, so I'm pretty everyone involved is already thinking up a plot for the next sequel WE PROMISE THIS REALLY IS THE LAST EXORCISM BUT DAMN IS IT HARDCORE.

Extra Tidbit: So we just had THE DEVIL INSIDE, also an exorcism/religion-themed found-footage horror movie. Still psyched for another, or has the devil of desire finally left you?
