Avatar kicking George Lucas in the ass to make 3D Star Wars?

With AVATAR finally making most people stop complaining about 3D (myself included) the door has been opened for a flood of 3D blockbusters, so why not the biggest blockbuster series of all?

George Lucas has been impressed with the AVATAR tech, so much so that he’s now considering a 3D STAR WARS release, but no, not the way you’re hoping.

“I liked it. I make movies like that, [so], I can appreciate what [James Cameron] went through to do it. [I’m] happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3-D. Haven’t been a big fan of 3-D, but that movie definitely improves in (the field of) 3-D. We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3-D. But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”

No, of course, why would he be talking about making a NEW trilogy in 3D, when he can just cram 3D into the old six movies and make the same amount of money with a six-part re-release for a fraction of the time and cost?

The worst part of this scheme is that it’ll work. Of course everyone will go out and f*cking see STAR WARS in 3D, and despite my bitching, I know I will too, I’ll have to. But the main problem I see with this is the amount of tech and re-rendering of stuff in the original trilogy to make it not look like garbage in 3D, and this also opens the door to a whole new slew of Lucas edits, the likes of which brought us such classic scenes as “Greedo shoots first,” “Han steps on Jabba’s tail” and “excruiciatingly long alien song and dance sequence.” Can’t wait.

It’ll be interesting to see I suppose, but all this really does is put off a new STAR WARS trilogy for probably another decade. Though maybe J.J. Abrams will have some time in his schedule then.
