Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 4 trailer signals the end of it all

This year will draw to a close with the ending of the fan-favorite series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The fourth and final season of the Netflix series will hit streaming on December 31, 2020, and the latest trailer prepares us for the beginning of the end.

Sabrina, like its parent series Riverdale, was originally created for broadcast. Riverdale was first developed for Fox and moved to The CW, while Sabrina was designed as a spinoff for The CW before it moved to Netflix with a two-season, 20-episode order. The series moved to Netflix after Riverdale became a monster hit for The CW thanks in part to new eyes finding the show's first season on Netflix and returning to the broadcast network for its second. Netflix deciding to end Sabrina with this final "Part 4" installment came as a bit of a surprise given the series' popularity but it does follow a particular pattern for the streamer. Ozark was renewed for a fourth & final season, despite its critical acclaim and status as one of their most-streamed shows while Dead To Me was renewed for a third & final season this year as well. The argument can be made that this is where the creative forces wanted to end these shows but Netflix seems to have a three-four season sweet spot unless you count Orange is the New Black or Stranger Things. The showrunner of Sabrina, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, still has a lucrative overall deal with producers Warner Bros. TV, and the fifth season of Riverdale, his first series, is coming back to The CW in 2021. 

Netflix does tease us with what's to come with this final run of the series which includes the Eldritch Terrors descending upon Greendale. This will cause the coven to fight each terrifying threat one by one: the Weird, the Returned, and the Darkness, to name a few. This will all lead up to the void, which is the End of All Things. 

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is based on the Archie comic book series of the same name and is centered on Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) in the fictional town of Greendale. It is a dark coming-of-age story that includes horror and witchcraft and it follows Sabrina as she has to reconcile her dual nature as a half-Witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world that humans inhabit. The series also stars Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Lachlan Watson, Gavin Leatherwood, Richard Coyle, and Miranda Otto.
