Christian Bale heads out west in trailer for Scott Cooper’s Hostiles

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's been a decade since Christian Bale's last western, James Mangold's remake of 3:10 TO YUMA, so it's certainly long past time for Bale to return to the genre. Sporting a stylish mustache, Christian Bale plays Joseph J. Blocker, a legendary Army Captain who reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back home to their tribal lands. Along the way they encounter Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike), a young window whose family has been murdered. Directed and co-written by Scott Cooper (BLACK MASS), the recently released teaser trailer for HOSTILES paints a suitably grim and gorgeous looking picture.

The official synopsis for HOSTILES:

Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale) who, after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back home to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche, and vicious outliers they encounter along the way.

HOSTILES had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3rd, but it will soon be screening at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th, so keep an eye out for a review from our own Chris Bumbray! The film doesn't yet have a distributor or release date, but that will likely change very soon.
